Seoul – hub of Korea’s film industry

The metropolis of 10 million inhabitants is not only Korea’s chief administrative, economic, educational and cultural center but also the hub of Korea’s film industry, being home to 95% of all film related companies and film facilities. Over 40% of all local movies are shot here each year. Korean movies like The Host, 200 Pounds Beauty, The Chaser, Scandal Makers or most recently The Secret Reunion are not only known to international festival audiences but are very successful at the local box office (a high popularity with local audiences). With more than 100 local productions released theatrically every year (2009: 118 domestic releases), the domestic market share has been moving between 40 to 60% over the past years (2009: 47%) making Korea one of the few countries in the world with a sustainable film industry. The average production budget of all domestic movies released in 2009 was around 2.6 Mill US$ (excluding P&A). In recent years, Seoul has become an increasingly interesting destination for international productions and co-productions: for example the Korean-French co-production Dream or the French Korean co-production A Brand New Life.
